Our very first vegetable garden
Last summer, I signed up for a plot in a community garden close to our home - 62nd street garden. Did not get one. But this spring they emailed me and were ready to give us a plot, for $40 for a whole year's rent. I was hesitant, I have never planted vegetables before. Antoine was most enthusiastic. We took it.

June 9th, our seeds started to come out. we planted a lot of arugula (because they taste so much better and stronger than those from stores) and radishes. Herds on the front row, and four Chinese cabbage 小白菜 on the right. Also sowed some zucchini, green peas, one Chinese cucumber given by a neighbor, two small potato (left over potato and I just bury them there). And at least five or six tomato plants from Liz and Mike (at the back row). Liz had been nursing these tomato plants for two months, and very generously shared them with us.

According to Mike and Liz (who are now not only our neighbors at home but also at the garden), the trick of growing tomato is not to be greedy at the beginning, plant less and they will grow bigger and yield more. But we were greedy and still planted way too many. We planed to plant four here but ended up planting six.

Great weather since we sowed. lots of sun and rain. The rain saved our a lot of work. For the whole summer we basically only come to the garden once a week, to water, weed, and harvest.
June 22, arugula and radishes in season.

Saturday lunch after the garden trip: all greens from garden, eggs, cheese, and strawberries from the Farmers Market on 61st Street.

July 28, another Giant zucchini... so for the whole summer, we have been eating a lot of zucchinis. They are big, but taste surprisingly good, not watery at all.
May 4th, our first time at the garden. Antoine plowed the land, we weeded. This was a cold spring and we waited for another week or two to plant seeds.
